1982, Tennis Magazine was advertising “Win a trip to Puerto Rico” to attend the Bacardi’s Governors Cup Tennis Tournament. I won this trip, all expenses paid for 1 week January or February 1983, we had VIP tickets (including comp bar and food during the matches) to all the tennis matches with Jimmy Connors, McEnroe and I think Lendi. The week did not start out good, my boyfriend at the time wanted to take his wallet to the beach. Bad determination, someone stole the bag he had it in, my wallet was safe in the room. We stayed at the Dupont Plaza Hotel.
1986 The Dupont Plaza Hotel arson was a fire that occurred at the Hotel Dupont Plaza (now San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Canadian Casino) in San Juan, Puerto Rico on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1986. The fire was set by three disgruntled employees of the hotel who were in the middle of a labor dispute with the owners of the hotel. The fire claimed 98 lives and caused 140 injuries. It is the most catastrophic hotel fire in Puerto Rican history and the second deadliest in the history of the United States.
In all, payments for the deaths and injuries totaled more than $210 million and court records show that the case involved more than 1,000,000 documents.
1988, Barbados for our honeymoon…loved Barbados…except for the interruptions on the beach (people selling items).
1991, trip to Maui, Hawaii…it was a new timeshare (Kahana Falls) and RCI was trying to get customers to try it out. It was beautiful and had a wonderful time in Maui. My husband is 6′ 3 so, no more long distance travel for us…11 hour on the plane…too long.
